There was no avoiding the bad weather today. It was all around us, north, south, east and west. A tug coming in from sea had his own problems. As a result of the storm, his barge was sinking.
Sinking Barge, Stormy Seas, and Killer Whales, wow. We made our way across Haro Strait with six-foot seas to calmer water. A group of Transient Killer Whales was our goal. My guests were up for the rough ride and I picked my way through the islands with the best water.
A Canadian Tug inbound with a tandem tow had problems. One of his barges was sinking. They pulled in to the west side of Sidney Island. I did not see its final resting place. My experience as an ocean tow-boat captain tells me they pulled into shallow water with a sandy bottom. Then they could settle onto the soft bottom and easily be salvage the barge.
Once we made it to the whales the water was much calmer and we enjoyed their company for about an hour before heading back to Friday Harbor.
Yep, Sinking Barge, Stormy Seas, and Killer Whales made for an interesting day. Follow me on Facebook too.
