Popeye, Our Celebrity Harbor Seal
Today as I was giving my safety briefing for my guests, we were interrupted as Popeye says Hi. She shows up at times to see what kind of handouts we have. She always strikes out with me; I have never fed her. She gets her name from being blind in her left eye. Look closely, and you can see her left eye is a bit milky.
Some days I will be cleaning my boat, and she shows up. She will splash me because I am not paying attention. One day I saw her first. I was hosing down my boat. I sprayed her with the nozzle. She ducked under and then popped back up to enjoy the shower. She was stretching her neck trying to take it all in.
We left Friday Harbor and headed north in search of Orca. A couple stops to see Seals and Stellar Sea Lions, and then we continued our tour to see more animals. I got word of Orca spotted off to our east, so we headed that direction. Two other vessels joined me in the search. Unfortunately, none of us were able to pick up the whales. Yesterday, we did see J Pod, but they stayed hidden from us today.
Some of our Sea Birds
There were Bald Eagles, Rhinoceros Auklet. I did not notice at the time, but in the pic with the seals, you can see a Black Oyster Catcher. They have a bright red bill, and it is standing on the rocks.
It is a gorgeous day on the water, and it feels good to be back out there again. It is always a treat for me and when Popeye says hi, that is a bonus.
This is still preseason, but we are very close to daily tours again and I can hardly wait.
