A Humpback Cartwheel in Haro Strait thrilled my guests.
We started off seeing Harbor Seals, and Bald Eagles.
Southern Resident Killer Whales
We began viewing Southern Resident Killer Whales. The first whale we saw was K21 Cappuccino a big male who is easy to ID because he has a notch in his dorsal fin about a third the way up.
Next, we saw K35 Sonata and J47 Notch playing with each other. L87 Onyx was seen from a distance. We were positioned correctly to see him but the whales flipped directions and he turned away from us.
Cart-Wheel
Navigating our way north, we were off to see a Humpback whale. We saw her for a few surfacings and a dive showing her arched back and tail fluke. Just before she dove she did a kind of cartwheel with a dramatic splash.
At Spieden Island we saw what I thought was an immature bald eagle in a snag but as I edit pics I see it is an adult just covered in blood. Newborn seal-pups are vulnerable because they are so tiny. My guess is that another had fallen prey to an eagle. Below him, we saw a couple Mouflon Sheep at the water’s edge munching on kelp and sea-weed, for needed nutrients.
The Humpback Cartwheel in Haro Strait was the best.
