J’s, K’s, L’s, Humpback, T49A’s. Both tours were pretty cool and both went long which is a good thing. There was just too much to see and not enough time.
We started off seeing Harbor Seals and Stellar Sea Lions. Then off to see J27 Blackberry and J46 Star, J38 Cookie, L72 Racer and her son L105 Fluke. I got some pics of NOAA doing their thing again today but just too many nice wildlife pics I am not going to spoil the post with them.
A Sea Lion with a fish in his mouth at Whale Rocks but the pic did not turn out great. We thought we saw a Sea Lion with something in his mouth earlier in the day at Shark Reef. Now looking at my pics it turns out it was just him swimming upside down and opened his mouth. A few views of a Humpback Whale who did not fluke for us to give a positive ID but a fellow captain/naturalist recognized the dorsal fin to be that of “Two-Spot”.
The T49A’s including an 11-month-old calf which is the young one you see in the pics. This was a fun group to watch.
Included is a pic of one of our constant worries and that is a supertanker transiting the strait laden with petroleum. This one the “Alaskan Legend” was being escorted and tethered by the Garth Foss. If the steering or engines were to fail on the tanker the tethered escort tug would be the backup Safety measure.
Her purpose is to bring the ship to a halt before running aground. That is, however, the worst possible scenario and would mean the end of most marine life in our Salish Sea as we know it.
