Yesterdays Whales
Yesterday there were three pods nearby. I was hoping today would be a repeat. We started north in search of the three pods of whales that were here yesterday. No luck. I took us well up into the Strait of Georgia and scanning all the way. Eventually, we saw T137A’s and wildlife.
My guests saw harbor seals, Stellar Sea Lions, Bald Eagles, and then we went through Active pass into Swanson Channel. We met a couple of BC Ferries and continued searching.
On the way back home thinking it was a bust we received word that the T137A’s were SE of Lopez Island. After stopping at Spieden Island to see Harbor Seals, Bald Eagles, and Mouflon Sheep lambs, we then moved on.
The boat that had spotted the Orca had broken down, so the whales were lost to those of us hoping to see them. About a mile and a half out, I saw the orca blows and alerted the other vessels looking for them.
Seal Kill
As we drew near, we were slowing down so as not to interfere with their echolocation. We arrived on scene seeing the pod finishing off a harbor seal and doing what I call a “Happy Dance.” It is after they have made their kill, eaten their meal, and breaching and playing after having meat in their bellies and feeling good.
I am sorry to say that I saw a couple of spy hops but trying to steer and navigate my attention was divided, and the lens captured the spy-hops, but they were not in focus.
After finishing off the seal, they started north. A couple of views later and we called it a day which was about a 4 1/2 hour tour. It ended up being a great day to be able to see T137A’s and wildlife.
