Today we started south for Saratoga Passage with the T46’s Northbound and just enough time to reach them, view them, and get back to Friday Harbor for guests to resume their activities. However, the pod turned back south and no one was going to be on the scene with them for us to locate. So, we turned around and headed for a Humpback Whale in Haro Strait. Another pod of Orca north of the border but we are not allowed to cross over until they lift the border closure.
We encountered some pretty big seas but they were on our stern so the ride was not so bad. Eventually, we found ourselves in better water and better views of our Humpback Whale.
The Humpback is Zephyr. She is the daughter of Divot and brought back her first calf at the age of eight years old last year. We ID Humpback Whales by the signature of the underside of their tail fluke. Each fluke is different like a fingerprint.
Prior to leaving the dock, a few Canada Goose paid us a visit at the boat. After the whale time, we saw Harbor Seals, Mouflon Sheep, and Bald Eagles.
