We had an epic humpback encounter today in the Salish Sea. I have way too many photos for a single post. This girl, ‘Strike,’ breached about 15 times, and there were many tail slaps and pectoral fin slaps going on, too.
We started north for the Strait of Georgia, and the water conditions were absolutely gorgeous. It was flat, calm, and like a mirror. I had hoped we would pick up a pod of orcas as we headed towards Point Roberts. We did not find any whales on the way up, so I continued to the last known position of three humpback whales west and north of Vancouver, BC.
When I neared the latitude and longitude coordinates, I had already slowed down. Then the sea erupted and out came this beautiful creature. This humpback is known as ‘Strike’ a female who was very active for us.
“The Sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.”
