Lots of Porpoise but no other Cetaceans
Stellar Sea Lions and Harlequin Ducks along with harbor seals, exotic animals, bald eagles, and porpoise. This and calm waters made for a beautiful day on the water.
The weather cooperated for a calm water day. It was a bit chilly but not a bad ride at all. The Stellar Sea Lions were beautiful to see. A group of them were curious about us, swimming towards us to check us out.
A few Bald Eagles on Whale Rocks and other places during our tour. Until this last week, I have been pretty successful seeing whales this winter. However, today the only Cetaceans we saw were a large group of Porpoise.
Large Search Area
We covered a lot of miles in search of whales. I headed south out of the harbor stopping to see the eagles and sea-lions. Then we headed southwest into the Strait of Juan de Fuca and made our way over towards Constance Bank off Victoria BC. Then up into Harro Strait combing the Canadian islands looking for some Biggs Killer Whales. We crossed over into the USA near Stuart Island and headed for the exotics at Spieden Island. Then up into Boundary Pass and back to Waldron Island. We scanned along Orcas Island on the way back to Friday Harbor.
A friend out of Canada was on another boat that searched the Strait of Georgia and Active Pass up north. If either one of us would have found the whales we would have shared that info so everyone could see them.
There were a couple of breaks in the overcast sky where we saw glimpses of sunshine. It would have been a whole lot warmer had the sun stayed out.
Other critters besides the Stellar Sea Lions and Harlequin were the Exotic Mouflon Sheep, Sika Deer, and Fallow Deer.
