Biggs Orca

This was a day for Biggs Orca. They were treating us to all kinds of wonderful viewing pleasure. There were lots of ew’s and ah’s today, especially with the evening sunsetting light we were seeing.

I stopped to share the “Canadian” Bald Eagles, and Harbor Seals on the tour.

My first tour was a long haul. There was rough water down towards Port Angeles where a pod of Killer Whales were seen. That said, I did not want to venture into the rough water for a lengthy trip. However, there was a pod of whales spotted from shore, killing seals not too far north of us. I headed that direction and by the time I got there the whales had vanished. There were about five of us searching the many miles of nooks and crannys on the shoreline.

Two Adult Male Orca

None 0f us were able to find those whales. On the other hand a Vancouver boat had spotted a pair of Orca Male. It was a half hour even further north. Most of our tour was travel time but I did succeed to get my guests on scene to see these two males. As a result we were the only Friday Harbor boat to make it to those orca. I was up abeam of Porlier Pass.

Nature is Beautiful and Brutal

We were late getting back but my next tour guests were aware because Lisa had let them know I was running late. As we neared Friday Harbor another pod of Orca had been spotted fairly close by. We headed out on the second tour and viewed the usual sea birds and harbor seals on the way. At one of our stops we saw the result of a Bald Eagle kill. This is pupping season among the harbor seals. Newborn pups are so tiny they are suceptable to predators. To illustrate, take a look at the photo with a bald eagle feasting on a harbor seal pup carcass.

Humpback Whales

We also spent time with Humpback Whales before arriving on scene with the Orca pod. The Orca were very playful and enjoying what I call their happy dance. They have meat in their bellies after a kill and are feeling good. In one of the pics you can see evidence of the kill. Specifically, one of the juvenile whales is dragging the intestines around with its dorsal fin.

The third tour was pretty much the same. As a result we saw the same humpback whales and same orca pod. Once again they were playful and having fun.

Gorgeous Sunset Lighting

The sunset lighting was so beautiful and Patos Island Lighthouse was a reflection of that beautiful light, bathing the lighthouse in a warm glow.

The first tour was a dificult one but the other two were more like our normal time spent viewing whales especially this day for Biggs Orca in the afternoon and evening.
