Two tours today and we saw a Humpback, Orcas and Puffin on the first tour. We saw Humpback, Orcas and Common Loon on the second. I saw my first loon of the season a week ago. We have two species of Loon here in the Salish Sea. We have the Common Loon as seen here and we have the Pacific Loon.
The Orcas we saw on both tours were the T99’s, consisting of T99 the matriarch and her kids T99B (with the two notches near the top of her dorsal fin), T99C and T99D. T99A is no longer around having died at some point.
In the pics you can see the Orcas towing kelp and seaweed around with their dorsal fins. I think I got carried away snapping pics of the Tufted Puffin but this one was being very cooperative and allowing me to keep on snapping.
On the afternoon tour we saw the pod torment a seal for ab out fifteen minutes before killing and devouring it. Look for the seal just under the surface or trying to leap out of the water ahead of the Orca.
It was a gorgeous day on the water and view these magnificent creatures we share the Salish Sea with.
