We left the harbor in search of Orca along with about nine other boats from Victoria, Friday Harbor, Anacortes, and Port Townsend. Later on, we were with Mama Zephyr and Calf Humpback Whales.
On our way south, we stopped off to see Harbor Seals and then started our search going south into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. I took us down to Partridge Bank and then turned west for about 15 miles, then no9rth into Haro Strait, searching the west side of the strait.
From there, we made our way to a pair of humpback whales that were in Spieden channel. We were viewing Zephyr and her calf yet unnamed as far as I know. If you notice the bumps on their heads, I like to point out that those are hair follicles.
We viewed them for a bit then shifted a couple of hundred yards to see the Steller Sea Lions at Green Point. While there, another nearby boat spotted a Minke Whale lunge feeding on a bait ball of herring or anchovies.
A couple of views of it as it spooked the flock of seagulls sitting amidst the bait ball, then it was time to head back to the harbor. It was also a frigid day, and we were all ready for something hot to drink, back at Friday Harbor.
