Our Whales Need Help!!! Today we saw a few of our Southern Resident Killer Whales. The J’s and K’s on the morning tour. On the afternoon tour, we saw T37’s, T37B’s and T99B’s. We even saw a Humpback mama and calf.
A few seabirds on our tour including, a Great Blue Heron in camouflage and a Kingfisher in flight.
Three Big Males
One of the Resident Whales, a big male was K21 Cappuccino. Others were J26 Mike and J27 Blackberry. All three are adult males with that massive 6′ tall dorsal fin.
We received sad news today. That being J35 Tahlequah gave birth to a calf and 30 minutes after seeing the young one it had died. As a result, she has started her grieving process keeping her baby girl afloat. Our Southern Resident Killer Whales are in Dire Straits in a way that the overused term cannot begin to bring justice to.
NOAA, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association has been entrusted with millions of dollars of taxpayer money to bring back our whales from the brink of extinction. They are failing miserably. This team has spent years focusing their attention on the effects of vessel sound interfering with their feeding and not in the least bit involved in providing more salmon for our starving Southern Resident Killer Whales.
NOAA Exploiting Our Whales
SeaWorld was the first exploiter of our whales. Now it is NOAA’s team under current leadership as the exploiter. They absorb millions into studies that keep them employed with lifelong careers. They have ignored the fact that for years now starvation is the main issue. Her team does not concern themselves with feeding the whales and has even has killed one of our southern residents. Their “study” methods include shooting a GPS tracker into the whale. L95 Nigel was shot with two bolts, two broad-heads and using a crossbow to shoot him. I say that she and her team are contributing to the demise of our beloved orca, not helping them.
How You Can Help
I urge everyone to please get involved in some way, no matter where you live. Look at NGO’s that ARE making a difference. A difference where our government namely NOAA is failing. NGO’s I suggest you check out, learn from and support are The Center For Whale Research, Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group, The Wild Fish Conservancy North-West, and Dam Sense.
Our whales are dying. The results are that two years ago we had 85, now we have 75. J35’s newborn did not survive. J16 Slick’s calf J50 Scarlett is likely to die any day. We are not even viewing J16 and her matriline. An exception would be J26 who typically will be further off from the pod. We are doing this in order to give the calf every possible chance to survive.
