L Pod Finally Here. The morning started off with us heading North to see a Humpback Whale. However, I received a report thatL Pod Finally Here, for the first time this year. They spend the winter ranging from Northern Vancouver Island down to Cape Mendocino California hunting for Salmon.
We headed directly for L Pod. They were off of Victoria, Canada and headed west (the wrong way). Once on scene with the pod, we saw that they were widespread. We were able to see many of the pod, but not all. The female and calf are L91 Muncher and her calf L122 yet unnamed
It was a beautiful day with flat calm water. The first whales we were able to photo were L91 Muncher and her calf L122. L122 was born in September of last year so she does not have a name yet. She should have a name by this fall.
Southern Resident Orca calves only have a 50% chance of survival in their first year of life. This is why they are not named until they have made it through their first winter. Naming is done in the fall by the whale museum or in some cases by the Salish Indian tribe.
A very nice day spending it with L Pod Finally Here sharing their presence with us.
